How Much Does a Concrete Driveway Cost in Perth? Price Guide

Short answer: $75 to $210 per square metre installed, GST included. On a single or double driveway that is $3,750 to $14,700, and the finish accounts for most of the gap. Here is the arithmetic.

What a driveway costs, finish by finish

A single is usually around 50 square metres, a double around 70. Here is what our published rates do at those two sizes.

All GST inclusive and installed. They cover minor site prep on a typical Perth sand pad, SL72 steel mesh, the pour, the finish, control joints and cleanup. Removing an old driveway, thickening for vehicles and a pump for tight access sit on top. Each is a checkbox on the instant estimator.

Measure yours first: length times width in metres. A 3 metre single running 16 metres to the street is 48 m2.

What moves the number

Size. The rate per square metre falls as the job grows, which gets its own section below. Under 20 square metres there is a $2,500 minimum.

Finish. On a 70 m2 double the gap between cheapest and dearest is $5,950 at the low end and $7,000 at the high. Plain grey is the workhorse. Exposed aggregate is WA's most popular driveway upgrade and the stone gives grip on a slope. Honed is ground back and sealed after the pour, which is where its cost sits.

What is under the ground. Most of Perth is sand, which compacts well and drains. The number moves on limestone shelf, clay pockets, old fill from a previous build, or a driveway that has to come up 300mm to meet a new garage slab. Bulk earthworks are quoted separately, along with excavation surprises like rock or deep fill.

Whether the old driveway comes out. Breaking out and carting away old concrete or paving runs $35 to $60 per square metre. It does not get the size discount, because demolition does not get cheaper per square metre the way pouring does. On a 70 m2 double that is $2,450 to $4,200 on its own. Pavers sit at the cheaper end, old reinforced concrete at the top.

Whether a truck can reach it. An agitator truck needs to get close enough to chute concrete straight in. Front driveways usually can, which is why they dodge the pump a rear alfresco often needs. Behind the house or through a narrow side gate, a pump adds $1,200 to $1,600 flat.

Why a bigger driveway costs less per square metre

Setting up a pour costs about the same whether the slab is 40 square metres or 90. Same forms, same crew, same day. So the rate per square metre drops as the area grows.

A 50 m2 single and a 70 m2 double both sit in the standard band, so they cost the same per square metre. The saving starts at 80. Take plain concrete: 70 m2 is $5,250 to $7,700, and 80 m2 is $5,700 to $8,400. Those extra 10 square metres cost $450 to $700, or $45 to $70 per square metre against a base rate of $75 to $110. Exposed aggregate does the same, $65 to $95 per square metre against a base of $115 to $155.

Going bigger genuinely lowers your rate. If the path down the side was already on your list, pour it at the same time. You also avoid a joint between two batches that never quite match.

Vehicle-duty thickening at 125mm

Our standard slab is 100mm on SL72 mesh. Under vehicles we go to 125mm, which adds $10 to $25 per square metre. That is $500 to $1,250 on a single and $700 to $1,750 on a double.

Two family cars is one thing. A caravan, a boat trailer, a loaded dual cab or a bin truck reversing over the crossover is another. If unsure, thicken it. Repairing a slab that cracks under a load it was never poured for costs more than the $700 to $1,750 the thickening would have cost.

The crossover, and why your council gets a say

The crossover is the section between your boundary and the kerb. It sits on the road reserve, which is council land, not yours.

That matters three ways. Councils generally want an application approved before a new or widened crossover is built, and approval takes time, so lodge it early. The council sets width, thickness, how it meets the kerb, and sometimes what finish is allowed out there. And a number of Perth councils contribute toward a first crossover, so ask rather than assume.

A crossover often adds another 15 to 20 square metres, depending on your verge depth. That is frequently enough to push a 70 m2 double past 80 m2 and into the lower rate. Permit fees, drainage and engineering sit outside our quote, and we flag them at the site visit.

A worked double, all in

A 70 m2 double in exposed aggregate, old cracked concrete out, thickened to 125mm for two cars and a trailer:

• Finish: 70 x $115 to $155 = $8,050 to $10,850
• Removal: 70 x $35 to $60 = $2,450 to $4,200
• Thickening: 70 x $10 to $25 = $700 to $1,750
• Total: $11,200 to $16,800

Removal and thickening add $3,150 to $5,950 on top of the finish. The same job in plain grey is $8,400 to $13,650.
